The space program has waned in popularity since the end of the Cold War. The bourgeois establishment no longer views it as necessary to secure "national" interests. I wonder how long before extraterrestrial "territory" is made available for private acquisition.

I do not find the idea itself ridiculous. I certainly view space exploration as desirable from both a material and scientific perspective, but Gingrich's proposal is likely little more than campaign rhetoric. However, the notion of expanding capitalism into space is rather disturbing.
